Paws and Portraits: Including Furry Babies in your next photo session in Phoenix

As a Phoenix family photographer (and a proud dog mom to two pups myself), I totally get it—our four-legged family members are just that: family! And honestly? Sometimes I like dogs more than people. There, I said it!

So, if you’re wondering whether you should bring your dog along to your next Phoenix area family photo session, the answer is a big, enthusiastic YES!

Why Include Your Pup in Your Family Photos?

Your fur baby is part of your everyday life, so why wouldn’t they be part of your family portraits? Dogs bring an extra dose of joy, energy, and personality to a session. Whether they’re giving your toddler sloppy kisses, sitting proudly like the goodest boy (or girl!), or photobombing the perfect shot, their presence adds a special touch that makes your photos uniquely yours.

Tips for a Paw-some Photo Session

As a Surprise, Arizona family photographer, I’ve had plenty of experience working with pups in photo sessions. Here are my top tips to make sure your session with your furry best friend is stress-free and full of fun:

  1. Exercise Beforehand – A tired pup is a well-behaved pup! A nice walk or some playtime before the session helps burn off extra energy so they’re ready to sit, stay, and pose like a pro.

  2. Bring Treats and Their Favorite Toy – Treats work wonders for getting those “puppy dog eyes” in the right direction, and a favorite toy can help keep their attention when needed.

  3. Choose a Pet-Friendly Location – Whether we're shooting at your home (perfect for cozy, in-home newborn sessions) or an outdoor spot in Phoenix, I’ll help you pick a location where your pup can be comfortable and safe.

  4. Coordinate Your Outfits – If you’re going for a neutral and cozy vibe, consider a cute bandana for your pup that complements your family's color palette.

  5. Be Flexible and Have Fun – Dogs have their own personalities, and sometimes they’ll do their own thing (which can lead to the best candid shots!). Embrace the chaos and trust me to capture the magic.

Bringing the Studio to You (Yes, Even for Your Pup!)

One thing that sets me apart as an in-home newborn photographer is that I bring the studio to you. If you have a new baby at home, your pup might be curious about their new tiny human sibling, and I love capturing those first interactions in a natural, stress-free way. Plus, your pup will feel most comfortable in their own space!
